Australia House, Japan

The Australia House, Japan competition was to design a building that could function as a residence, atelier, community centre and exhibition space for up to six Australian artists. It is located in the mountainous and rural Echigo - Tsumari region of Japan where they have up to 5 metres of snow and hot, humid summers.

It all had to be done for a very tight budget and in under 130 sqm.
Our building employs ways of layering skins to create multiple spatial zones for the six artists to inhabit and exhibit within. An outer skin of transparent polycarbonate holds back the snow and lights up like a beacon when the building is partially buried. In the summer months the building opens up and the spaces spill onto a large open area for working, community gathering and exhibiting.
