Artspace: More than an art gallery
Artspace is not just an art gallery.
Artspace is a community building. It is free to enter and is part of the plaza beside it with its ever-changing art banners and openable interactive facade. It tells the story of the long history of Woolloomooloo and the art making community of Sydney and has an archive and research space that is accessible to all.
Artspace is crucial to the development of Australian art. The Gunnery building, that Artspace now wholly occupies, includes 11 artists studios, given to mid-career and developing artists for free for 12 months. This connects them with international galleries and fosters collaboration.
Artspace is a function centre. The middle floor of the Gunnery has a glorious harbour edge room for gatherings of all kinds.
We feel so lucky to have worked with Create NSW and Artspace on this fantastic bit of public infrastructure, and thank the City of Sydney and Heritage NSW for their support.
