B-Corp month and International Womens’ Day 2022

Missing from photo is Monika Barjola and director Lee Hillam who’re both busy wearing their other hats as a mother and design juror respectively.

March is B Corp month, presenting an opportunity for us to reflect on what it means to be a B Corp and why it matters to us.

Dunn & Hillam Architects has been a certified B Corp ANZ member since 2016 and it's something we're proud of. For us, being a B Corp means validating our way of working, which has always considered people, planet and the profit that supports a stable work environment.

The beginning of B Corp month coincides with International Women’s Day 2022, so it seems apt to shine a spotlight on the women of Dunn & Hillam Architects. We support a diverse and equitable work environment because it’s good for all of us, and brings the range of viewpoints to architecture that we need to make places for a diverse and equitable population.

According to Parlour, “Women have been an active and successful part of Australian architecture for over a century. However, they leave the profession at much higher rates than men, experience career constrictions that limit their ability to participate, and are dramatically under-represented at senior levels of the profession.”

To help change this we’ve joined the Parlour Collective  and encourage you to support their ongoing initiatives surrounding gender and equity in architecture. Read more about the Parlour Guides to Equitable Practice here.

This year, we welcomed Clare Johnston and Monika Barjola to the Dunn & Hillam Architects team, making us 8 women out of 15 strong — and of our 6 registered architects, 4 are women. We’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Sophie Canaris for her new Committee Member roles in EmAGN and the Built Environment Committee.
